Big Almaty Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in Zaalayskiy Alatau Mountains, in Almatinka gorge. The length of the lake is 1.6 km, width from 0.75 to 1 km. The river Big Almatinka flows into the lake on the south side. Like most lakes in theTien Shan, it appeared as a result of the earthquake.

Big Almaty Lake is part of the Ile-Alatau National Park. On the northern end of the dam, you can see the three main peaks theSovietPeak(4317m) - the south-east, Lake Peak (4110m) andTouristPeak (3954m). Maximum water level is in August, this time of year the water temperature is 10-12 degrees Celsius. The lake is beautiful at any time of the year; all year round it has an unusually beautiful color - from light green to turquoise. Especially it is fine in autumn, when the lake is covered by the first snow, changing the color. In winter, tourists usually ride from the slopes of the gorge. Big Almaty Lake is fed by glacier water, on all sides it is surrounded byTien Shanfirs, juniper and aspen.

The distance from the city to the lake is 28 km. Having done this fascinating tour, you'll get a nice view; it is either scenic view or fresh mountain air. Having been in this beautiful place, you will have a rest from city noise and fuss. On the way back, you can visit the falcon nursery "Sunkar", many birds of which are listed in the Red Book.
